Amina (aa-min-aah) Mahmood

Greetings!

My name is Amina Mahmood and I am a New York State Licensed Psychologist. I am able to provide clinical services in English and Urdu/Hindi. At present I am only providing tele-health appointments, with some limited in-person options available in the Capital Region, NY. I am also available for workshops and community events if scheduling allows.

I have a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Iowa (2008), and I completed my pre-doctoral internship at the University of South Florida’s Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (2007-08).

My clinical experiences include: managing a clinical research project on Huntington Disease, conducting neuropsychological assessments, working at a university counseling center, and in a private practice.

I have provided services to children and adults in different settings (including a Veterans Affairs Hospital, women’s center, and university hospital). I typically work with teens through adults—but will work with younger individuals if I have the expertise and skills to do so (this would depend on the concern the client is coming in with!).

My clinical interests include multicultural issues in psychology (specifically working with people of the global majority, immigrant and refugee populations), health psychology, and relationship issues (including interpersonal violence).

I view psychotherapy from a collaborative, multiculturally-oriented lens, and at present am evolving in my own learning and approach to include de-colonial and liberation psychology frameworks within my clinical work.

That being said I incorporate evidence-based treatments as needed and appropriate.

On a personal note I was raised in several different countries, and now reside in the USA. Being exposed to global travel and residing in countries outside of my country of “origin” (Pakistan) has definitely influenced my perspectives and worldview.

Activities I enjoy include: reading, writing, traveling, being part of community work, practicing mindfulness and yoga. In reality I am a parent to a young child and demands of parenthood, work, and prioritizing family have shifted this list somewhat! So realistically at present I enjoy being able to finish a cup of coffee or tea without interruption, a full night of sleep, and some quiet time during the day!

Welcome! I look forward to connecting with you. Please contact me to see if I may be a psychologist who can help you in moving forward in your journey, or if you have any other questions (e.g. information about psychotherapy, referral information)!
